Cross-Cut or particle type paper shredders needs to be oiled frequently. Oiling paper shredders is one of the most overlooked routine maintenance tasks.
Paper dust builds up inside the cutting assembly and packs together like cement. Oil softens packed dust, which allows the movement of the cutting head to push it out. The finer the cut the shredder makes, the more oil it needs. Small particle cut shredders and D.O.D. spec machines require a lot of oil, and for these machines we recommend an Automatic Lubricating Device Oil*. We do not recommend the use of WD-40 or any type of spray-on oil.

The cutters on paper shredders are in constant use when shredding papers and documents. They are subject to all the particles from this paper building up and packing together around them which results in the blades becoming dull and not shredding as they are supposed to. A rule of thumb for maintaining these blades in optimum working order is the more you use the shredder, the more it will need to be oiled.
Another consideration for oiling paper shredders is the type of cut the machine makes. Strip cut shredders do not need oiling as often as cross cut shredders.
Use only paper shredder oil that is specifically manufactured for this purpose such as our Intimus Brand Paper Shredder Oil or lightweight machine oil. Never use WD40 or any other lubricant that is spray-on oil. They can cause the paper particles to build up on the cutter heads thus causing the very problem you are trying to correct.
Using the wrong type of oil can cause damage that eventually will ruin your paper shredder and it will either have to be professionally repaired or it will become trash and you will be shopping for a new one.
Besides oiling the cross-cut paper shredders, all strip-cut and cross-cut shredders should have the cutting head cleaned out once a year. Please contact us or call 770-449-1103 or 1-800-449-2680 to place a service call.
